Let’s take a closer look at some of the symptoms of colds and flu.

Symptoms of cold and flu

Headaches

A Headache is a very common symptom reported by Aussies, with around 15% of the population taking medicine for a headache at any given time. If your headache is associated with a cold it is technically known as “secondary headache”, that is a headache that is linked to an underlying disorder.

Fever

Your normal body temperature is around 37°C, so a mild fever is when your temperature rises to around 39°C, with anything over 40°C considered high and a reason to seek medical attention. Fever is not usually a symptom of a cold. In fact, the presence of fever in adults is a good indicator that you might be suffering with something more serious than a common cold.

Blocked nose

Another common symptom of colds and flu is a blocked or runny nose. A blocked nose, known as nasal congestion, happens when the blood vessels and tissues lining the inside of your nose swell up, causing that blocked or stuffy feeling. You may also get a runny nose.

Coughs

When we have a cold, our body makes extra mucus and coughing helps in expelling this mucus from our airways. While they can be annoying, a cough is fairly common when you catch a cold and can last for 3 weeks or more.

Body aches

Body aches and pains are another common symptom of colds and flu. They happen in about 50% of people who catch a common cold.
